Female sexual arousal disorder occurs as a result of lack of vaginal lubrication during sexual activity. Women suffering from this disorder experience lack of genital swelling during sexual stimulation which causes less blood flow to the genital area.

When the vagina become engorges with blood during sexual arousal, vasocongestion occurs in which clear fluids seeps from the congested tissue to the inside of vaginal wall. The lubrication in the vagina help with better thrusting, provide more pleasure and less pain during sexual intercourse.

The amount of lubrication produce by a woman depends on how sexually aroused she is and may also vary at different stages of her life. Women are different from men in a sense that it takes longer time for women to get sexually aroused before they are ready to have sexual intercourse. Women need more foreplay to get them sexually aroused where as men can get aroused in shorter amount of time.

Causes of Female Sexual Arousal Disorder

Female sexual arousal disorder may be caused by physical factor, emotional factor, or both. Physical factor that caused FSAD may include the following.

• Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause.
• Chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
• High blood pressure.
• Circulation problems caused by damaged blood vessels.
• Nerve damage in the pelvic area.
• Medication side effects.
• Nerve damage caused by surgery (hysterectomy).
• Nerve damage caused by vaginal tearing during childbirth.
• Smoking.
• Alcohol and drug abuse.

Emotional factor that caused FSAD may include the following

• Stress and anxiety.

Types of Treatment

Emotional cause of FSAD can be treated with sex therapy or psychotherapy. Sex therapy can treat female sexual arousal disorder caused by emotional distress where as psychotherapy can treat emotion related problems such as problems with self-image or problems in relationships.

Physical cause of FSAD can be treated with hormone replacement therapy or blood flow enhancing medication. Hormone replacement therapy is normally used to treat many of the symptoms associated with menopause including restoring vaginal lubrication. Hormone replacement therapy involves the use of estrogen, progesterone, and androgens to compensate for changes of the body’s hormone level.
