Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are mainly transmitted through sexual contact such as oral sex, vaginal sex, or anal sex. Young sexual active people who engaged in risky sexual behaviors such as having multiple sexual partners, having unprotected sex, and sharing contaminated needles have high risk of contracting STDs. Women who frequently use oral contraceptives over the use of condoms are also at high risk of contracting STDs.

Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be transmitted from contaminated blood transfusion. Many STDs can be transmitted from infected mother to the baby during pregnancy, childbirth or after birth when breast-feeding the baby. Most people infected with STDs may not experience any symptoms and they can infect others unknowingly. In third world countries STDs are widely spread that resulted in high number of deaths because many are poor and do not have access to treatment and prevention.

Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be cure and some have no cure. People who are completely cured can get re-infected from sexual partners who are still infected with the disease. For this reason you and your sexual partners should be treated completely before engaging in sexual activity to prevent re-infection.

STDs that have no cure, prevention is the best method for treating the disease. Practicing safe sex with the use of condoms, avoid multiple sexual partners, and avoid sharing needles can reduce the risk of contracting STDs.
