Female sexual dysfunction is caused by four different types of sexual disorder and these include sexual desire disorder, sexual arousal disorder, orgasmic disorder, and painful intercourse (Dyspareunia).
There are four phases of sexual response cycle for both men and women and these include excitement phase, plateau phase, orgasm phase, and resolution phase. Sexual dysfunction occurs when any of the four phases is affected with sexual disorder that leads to distress.
• Excitement phase is the ability to have desire for sexual activity.
• Plateau phase is the ability to get sexually aroused during sexual stimulation.
• Orgasm phase is the ability to achieve orgasm during sexual stimulation.
• Resolution phase is the ability for sexual organs to return to nonexcited state.
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder
(HSDD) is one of the sexual disorders that caused female sexual
dysfunction. HSDD affects the excitement phase by causing lack of
interest in sexual activity. HSDD is the most common form of sexual
dysfunction that affects women by causing lack of sexual desire that
often leads to distress.
Female sexual arousal disorder
affects the plateau phase by causing lack of vaginal lubrication during
sexual stimulation. Sexual arousal is caused by increased blood flow to
the genital area, sexual arousal disorder limits the amount of blood
flow to the genital area and if a woman is unable to get aroused she is
unable to achieve or maintain vaginal lubrication. Lack of vaginal
lubrication can cause painful intercourse which can also affect her
sexual relationship.
Female orgasmic disorder
affects the orgasm phase by affecting the ability to achieve consistent
orgasm during sexual stimulation. Orgasmic disorder can caused distress
in some women because she is not able to achieve sexual satisfaction
she gets from orgasm. However, some women have learned to enjoy the
ability to get sexually aroused from sexual stimulation without the
presence of orgasm.
Painful intercourse or dyspareunia is caused by lack of vaginal lubrication and it is more common among women than men. Lack of vaginal lubrication may be caused by vaginal infections, contraceptive cream and foam, and lack of sexual arousal during sexual stimulation.
Painful intercourse may also be caused by vulvar vestibulitis syndrome and pelvic pain. Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome is a condition that caused severe pain at the entrance of the vagina. Pelvic pain during intercourse is caused by stretching of the uterine ligaments. Vaginismus is another painful intercourse that is caused by involuntary contraction of the muscles of the vaginal wall.
Female sexual dysfunction may be caused by physical factor, psychological factor, or both. Sexual dysfunction may be lifelong or acquired. Individual with lifelong sexual dysfunction have always experience one or more sexual disorder in their life time. Individual who never experience sexual dysfunction may acquired one or more sexual disorder due to illness, certain prescribed medication, or depression.
Psychological caused of sexual dysfunction may be treated with
psychotherapy, sex therapy, and couples therapy. Physical caused of
sexual dysfunction may be treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
and testosterone therapy.
