In general there are at least three different types of rape committed by rapist and these may include stranger rape, acquaintance rape, and statutory rape.

Stranger rape is committed by someone unknown to the victim and the rapist commits the rape mainly to express power and anger towards the victim.

Acquaintance rape is committed by someone known to the victim and the rapist commits the rape mainly for achieving sexual gratification.

Statutory rape is defined as adult having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of consent regardless whether the underage person agreed to engage in sexual activity.

The types of rape that occur most frequently is acquaintance rape also known as date rape. Acquaintance rape is usually committed by someone known to the victim through friends or acquaintance that may occur in dating situation. The high incidence of acquaintance rape may be the results of miscommunication.

According to experts Muehlenhard & Linton, most men misinterpret women’s action such as cuddling or kissing as a desire to engage in sexual intercourse even though she may have already express her desire not to have sex. Most men may misinterpret her actions as “token resistance” that she really want to have sex but doesn’t want to appear “too easy”.

In one study conducted by Muehlenhard & Hollabaugh, some women say no when they mean yes and the reasons for saying no because they don’t want to appear as promiscuous, or they desire to be in control.

This kind of double message may actually promote rape in situation when women engage in token resistance and men ignoring her protest only to find out she actually want to have sex will only reinforced men that women desire to have sex even when they say no. This may be one of the factors that lead to men sexual coercion by ignoring women’s genuine refusals to engage in sexual interaction and may not consider his actions as rape.

In the early 1990s, there was increasing number of cases that involved the use of date rape drugs to sedate the victims. The victims was sexually molested and raped after they were secretly drug by the rapist. These types of rape are referred to as date rape because the assault is committed by someone known to the victim through friends or new acquaintance.

The drugs that were commonly used include Rohypnol, gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and ketamine hydrochloride (special K) that the rapist secretly slips into the victim’s drink without being detected.

Rohypnol is a powerful sedative used for presurgical anesthetic and for treating insomnia. Rohypnol can cause sedation within 20 to 30 minutes after ingestion and the effects can last for several hours. Rohypnol causes muscle relaxation and may also cause total amnesia when combined with alcohol. Rohypnol is difficult to detect because it has no taste and excreted from the body in very short time.

GHB is used for general anesthetic, increasing muscle mass, and for treating insomnia. GHB take effect within 10 to 60 minutes after ingestion and can last for several hours. GHB is popular used as recreational drug in night clubs and rave scene because it has mind-altering effects. GHB is difficult to detect because it is odorless and tasteless.

Ketamine is used for general anesthetic and for treating major depressive disorder. Ketamine take effect within 20 minutes after ingestion and can last for several hours. Ketamine is also used as recreational drug with powerful hallucinations effects.
